Awqaf SA / AMS Greening Project Press Release: 04092007 The Orient Islamic School (OIS) received
a prize of R1500 from Awqaf SA for the Annual Greening Competition which is a
joint project of the Association of Muslim Schools and Awqaf SA. The school
adopted the St Augustines School as part of the greening outreach.
Participating schools are expected to engage learners and educators in the
planning and implementation of the planting of trees and food gardens or
any environment related project in a nearby school. Funds are also raised by the
learners. The project was done in September 2006. The Head of Humanities at the
school, Mr Ahmed Manjoo, said " We are overjoyed at receiving the prize.
We have developed a good relationship between the learners of both schools and
we hope to extend this programme." Asked what they were going to do with the
prize, he said "We will be buying books for our library". Dr Mohamed Said
Karodia (seen handing the cheque to Mr Manjoo), who represents Awqaf SA and is
the Project Convenor was ecstatic about the future of the Tabi'ah/ nature month

ARBOR WEEK – 29 AUGUST - 2 SEPTEMBER 2005 Awqaf SA – in partnership with the Association of Muslim Schools (AMS) has embarked on a programme to encourage schools and learners to engage in a GREENING PROJECT involving tree planting and food gardens in needy communities and neighbouring schools. In this inception year, 5 schools will be selected on the basis of a short list of schools emanating from a business plan (refer to Annexure A) submitted by all competing schools. Should the project find support and be successfully implemented, the programme would be extended to more schools (including madressahs, masjids, etc over time) InshaAllah 3 of the selected schools will each receive a humble R500 to spend on the respective project. The best overall plan will receive R1000,00. The Runner Up will receive R750.00 Results: Only Gauteng schools were invited to participate as a pilot project: 2 prizes were awarded by Awqaf SA on the recommendation of the adjudicator Dr MS Karodia:
1st Prize: Tshwane Muslim School R1000,00 2nd Prize: Al Ghazali College R750,00
It was an express condition that the money be spent on food gardens in neighbouring poor and disadvantaged communities.
Tshwane Muslim School: Learners from the intermediate phase of the school participated with the help of educators. The schools that TMS worked with are the Zodwa Lower Secondary School and the St Annes Primary School. Zodwa is a special school for children with disabilities. Both schools are located in Atteridgeville which neighbours Laudium.
