Water
Wells for Malawi
AwqafSA in conjunction with the Muslim
Woman Magazine launched a "Build a well" campaign in
January 2010, through a series called Empowering Women Islamically,
which encourages Muslim Women in South Africa to be more involved in
community projects. Through this project, we have Muslim women in
South Africa donated funds to build 12 wells in Malawi. This will be
an ongoing project. Anyone wishing to contribute to this and other
initiatives should contact info@awqafsa.org.za.
Awqaf personnel and its partners are currently in Malawi in order to
get the construction started.

The
Islamic Vision of Development in the Light of Maqasid
al-Shariah (Higher Objectives of the Shari'ah)
M Omer
Chapra
The ultimate goal of all Islamic teachings is to be
a blessing for mankind. This is the primary purpose for which the
Prophet (S) * was
sent to this world (Qur’an, 21:107).1
One of the
indispensable ways
to realize this goal is to promote the falah
or real well-being of all
the people living on earth, irrespective of their race, color, age,
sex or nationality.2
The word falah
and its derivatives have
been used 40 times
in the Qur’an. Another word, fawz,
which is a synonym of falah,
has also been used 29
times along with its
derivatives. This is also the goal towards which the muezzin calls
the faithful five times a day, showing thereby the importance
of falah in
the Islamic worldview.

Mufti Taqi Usmani, World Renowned Islamic Economic
Advisor speaks to the WEF 2010... read
or download full speech

In modern economics, we are
used to a purely materialistic and secular approach that does not allow
religious concepts to interfere with its theories and concepts, on the premise
that economy is outside the domain of religion. It is, however, an interesting
irony that every dollar note has the admission: “In
God we trust”,
but when it comes to develop theories to earn dollars or to distribute or spend
them, trust is placed only on human ideas based on personal assessments; God is
held totally out of picture, as being irrelevant to economic activities!!!
