DRAFT PRINCIPLES ON MUSLIM COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE LIVING AND DEVELOPMENT

PROPOSED FOR ADOPTION AT THE  1st MUSLIM CONVENTION ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT :

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA, 2002/1423

We, the Muslims of South Africa, dedicate ourselves to modelling our lives on the principles of sustainable living and development based on Islam and maintaining a mutually supportive relationship with our fellow human beings and together acting to preserve our natural surroundings -

Conscious of the fact that the Almighty Creator in His infinite mercy has granted the human species the privilege of enjoying the boundless beauty of this planet and the use of its natural wealth for the benefit and well being of ourselves and equally the rest of His creation;

Bearing in mind that the resources of this planet while bountiful is not unlimited and that we have a duty to ensure equity and justice for all people living today;

Reminding ourselves that while the human race is the dominant and favoured species of all creation endowed with the faculty of reason, that we do not own this planet and cannot claim a monopoly of it;

Being aware of the fact that the Creator has appointed us the guardians of this planet thus placing a sacred trust in our hands;

Knowing that there are large groups of our fellow human beings in this country and many other parts of the world who are living under crisis conditions and that we are under an obligation to fulfil this trust to alleviate wherever possible the hardships they encounter;

Knowing the severe damage we as a species have inflicted upon the planet, should take immediate measures to rectify the damage we have visited upon its ecosystems and modify our demands to the extent that it will preserve its beauty and its diversity;

We commit ourselves to the adherence and incorporation into our daily lives of the following principles.

·        To increase our endeavours to uplift the spiritual and physical condition and the dignity of our fellow human beings through poverty reduction and education programmes.

·        To respect and preserve the natural environment in the manner in which we conduct our daily lives and to treat it in compliance with the responsibilities laid upon us by the Creator.

·        To conduct our commercial and employment practices in a manner that is ethical, just and morally defensible.

·        To treat our employees with dignity and with the same consideration as we would show our own families.

·        To temper our use and consumption of finite resources with due regard to and consideration for the legacy we leave behind for future generations

·        To temper our extraction and manufacturing processes with due consideration to the preservation of traditional lifestyles, the preservation of the environment and the protection of the earth's ecosystems thus ensuring that our actions have a minimal negative impact on our fellow beings and the natural environment.

·        To improve norms of justice and equity to the highest standards required of us by our Creator in all our dealings.

·         To create an awareness within our community, our families and particularly our children concerning the responsibilities and trust placed in our hands by the Creator.
