A "Community Waqf" is a designated endowment fund established to support empowerment or community development activities in a particular community of a particular geographic area. For example, a Community Waqf may be set up for Phoenix or Mitchells Plain or Khayaletsha. The income generated from the waqf will be spent in that community. The Community Waqfs are set up in cooperation with the local community. The  long term aim is to provide sustainable funding for the developmental needs of the community and to  empower the community through a variety of projects, including:Examples of expenditure may be:

§       Masjid and madressah upgrading , maintenance, & development

§       Subsidisation of staff salaries

§       Bursaries for school and tertiary education

§       Da’wah

§       Youth development

§        Skills training, self-reliance, and job creation  programmes

To date Awqaf SA has established four Community Waqfs. These are:

  • Riverlea
  • Vlakfontein
  • Emndeni
  • Kagiso

All of these are in Gauteng and have been established by donors wishing to help those specific communities. In these instances, a community needs analysis is done and sustainable funding for a variety of projects and programmes are implemented

Towards which community waqf would you like to donate to? Its your choice. Your passion.

All waqfs made are treated as Discretionary unless otherwise specified by the Donor.
