Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI) of Islamic Development Bank Group, Jeddah, Kuwait Awqaf Public Foundation (KAPF),  and National Awqaf Foundation of South Africa (Awqaf SA) are organizing an International Conference on “Developing Waqf Institutions for Sustainable Community Development and  Poverty Eradication (Shari'ah, Legal, and Regulatory Perspectives).”   during August 17-19, 2007 (3-5 Shabaan 1428). The objective of the Conference is to explore the Shari'ah, legal and regulatory issues that affect the growth of awqaf institutions. In recognizing the potential role of awqaf in sustainable  community development, poverty alleviation and infrastructure development, the Conference will highlight the importance of awqaf so that it is better known and understood by the people and in order to promote and expand academic studies and teaching on the subject of Awqaf in the SADC region. The organizers invite submission of theoretical and empirical papers on Shari'ah, legal and regulatory aspects of awqaf institutions and explore the aspects that may facilitate or hinder the growth. Papers must also suggest ways and reforms so that the impediments to the growth of awqaf institutions can be minimized. The papers are expected to be original, lucid, and analytically rigorous. Selected papers contributed to the Conference are likely to be published. The upper limit for the size of the paper is 10,000 words.

There is no submission fee. All papers will go through a refereeing process before acceptance by the Conference Technical Committee. The organizers will pay for the authors’ coming from outside South Africa single round-trip economy class air ticket, and for their boarding and lodging.
